A Fix for Auto-Formatting Problems

This is your less-than-60 seconds tip of the day. When you cut-and-paste from your web browser into Microsoft Word, sometimes the formatting can be terrible. This can even happen with PDFs and other Word documents. If, after cutting and pasting, the formatting is terrible just follow this quick tip:

  1. Select the badly formatted text
  2. Press Ctrl + {Space Bar}

Using the control key plus the space bar eliminates all formatting on the text in any Microsoft Office program. There are some ways to reconfigure Office programs to paste unformatted text by default, but they can be complicated to use and have side effects. After all, you might like the formatting much of the time.

So if you have strangely formatted text after cut-and-paste, just select it and hit Ctrl + {Space Bar}
